"Vietgone" Post-Show Discussion w/Susan Lieu

Watch the theatrical hit “Vietgone” with Susan Lieu, who will take the stage for a post-show discussion unpacking the complexity of Vietnamese refugee families and their untold stories.

Arkansas, 1974, after the fall of Saigon. Two young survivors (who may or may not be the play-wright’s parents) meet in America. Will this strange new land of burritos, bikers and pot allow them to fall in love? Flipping stereotypes and remixing history, Vietgone cooks up a sexy, funny romp that’s a secret origin story for playwright Qui Nguyen (author of Raya and the Last Dragon)!

Produced by Pork Filled Productions and SIS Productions. Buy tickets for the August 15th show HERE.

Susan @ Seattle Public Theater w/UNRIVALED

Susan will be doing a reading of her memoir before the start of this incredible show UNRIVALED put on by SIS Productions.

UNRIVALED is a fun “Mean Girls” take on two of the most exalted writers of all time as they juggle friendship, career, love and political intrigue – you know, all in a day’s work for two iconic females from 11th Century Japan! Feisty and fresh, this reimagining of the rivalry between Murasaki Shikibu (The Tale of Genji) and Sei Shonagon (The Pillow Book) explores what it means to be female in a man’s world. Why is it that some things haven’t changed, even after a thousand years?! Inspired by real-life icons from 1,000 years ago, this playful historical fiction is great for teens through elders and everyone in-between.

Get tickets HERE and make sure it’s the Thursday, May 23rd show!

Intergenerational Healing and the F Word: Feelings
For many Vietnamese refugees, expressing feelings is shameful and a sign of weakness. But what happens when unresolved PTSD breeds a culture of silence, family dysfunction, impossible standards of beauty, and emotional distance? How can intergenerational healing be possible when no one wants to confront it? Sociologist Professor Haitrieu Nguyen unpacks these complex questions with author Susan Lieu and her memoir The Manicurist’s Daughter.

Co-produced by Vietnam Society. Part of the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art’s annual IlluminAsia Festival to celebrate, convene, learn, reflect, and foster connections through Asian arts and cultures!

Location: The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, Freer Gallery, Meyer Auditorium. Washington DC. Free tickets HERE.

In the latest “How They Did It” conversation co-presented by Litquake and LitCamp, we’ll hear from five intrepid authors of recent memoirs, all of whom took the heroic step of committing their fascinating stories to the page. Eddie Ahn (Advocate), Sylvia Brownrigg (The Whole Staggering Mystery), Margaret Juhae Lee (Starry Field), Susan Lieu (The Manicurist's Daughter), and Carvell Wallace (Another Word for Love) bravely unfurl stories of family, memory, ambition, healing, and love. Our moderator is Rachel Howard, author of the memoir The Lost Night. What did they risk on the page? What, if anything, do they regret? And how can they stir other would-be memoirists to take up the mantel of bravery and write their stories, no matter the stakes?
